Dear Coordinator
Yesterday I sent out a reminder email regarding the old telephone scam about gaining access to your computer from someone purporting to be from 'windows'. I have received a couple of emails saying that it is an old scam doing the rounds again but as it has happened yet again to one of our members I never think it does any harm to be reminded.
Also I have received an email from one of our members reminding us about scam emails from banks asking for our passwords etc due to a security check or the like. Banks of course always say they NEVER ask for any personal information so delete them.
Another warning is, if you are in any doubt at all about an email suggesting you click on a link, don't, as there is a virus emerging called GoodnightZeus that can encrypt your hard drive.
It is always a good idea of course to back up any of your work, particularly any important documents or photos on a stand alone hard drive. It is an idea not only due to virus attack but just due to computer breakdown of course.
A another warning is, if you are contacted by a 'bank' asking for details for whatever reason and they suggest you ring back to verify they are genuine, do so from another phone as they could well have held the line open. Again the rule applies banks NEVER ask for personal information so best to ring off.
Also another problem that occurs from time to time is an email that appears to be from a known friend, possibly their contact list has been hacked, and you are prompted to click on a link or read a dreadful story of them being attacked in foreign country and need money. Don't have anything to do with them. Do not reply directly to the email just delete it and contact your friend direct to warn them so they can warn others on their contact list and change their password with their provider.
Thank you to all who have contributed to the sharing of information which goes a long way to keeping us safe.
